A Global Cry for Freedom

We all watched speechless last month as a nation stood up. Then we watched astounded in the weeks that followed as dictators fell. Today, we watch uneasy as a vicious dictator threatens not just his own nation, but ours as well. For forty years Gaddafi has ruled with an iron fist. For forty years he has lied to and oppressed his own people. The people of Libya are just like you and me. They long for a safe harbor from the world around them. A quiet place to raise their children and hope for a better future. We watch this week as the very fabric of our own nation is tested.

Libya has a government so corrupt they would massacre their own to remain in power. A man so destructive he would tell the woman of his nation that he will kill their children if they remain in protest. As I write this article 600 confirmed American citizens are trapped in a country that only one hour ago encouraged the people to rise up and fight all westerners. They are trapped in airports, hiding in bunkers. These citizens and the thousands of dual citizens are part of our nation. The majority of America is peaceful. We want nothing more than to focus on our very own issues. I find myself today bouncing between world news and democracy pamphlet design, all while writing this article. There is so much to do.

Why the Idiocy About Unemployment?

My wife, a labor economist, is upset with NPR's "The Take Away" (and many other news programs) for reinforcing the myth that somehow the unemployed are to blame for not having a job. We all should be angry as well because the jobs just aren't there. In fact, the latest unemployment statistics show that there are five unemployed workers available for every vacant job. Why blame workers when it's so clear that Wall Street's reckless gambling caused the jobs crisis?

By now, you'd think we'd have buried this issue. But like Dracula it refuses to die. And so, I return to the subject with the hope of driving a stake through its heart and giving it a proper burial. Among the claims we need to put to rest:

1. Extended unemployment benefits are causing unemployment. Extending benefits for the long-term unemployed will only encourage them to sit at home on their extended derrieres and let vacant jobs go begging.

What jobs? We're down 8 million since the start of the Great Recession. We aren't even creating enough new jobs to keep up with population growth. So what jobs are the unemployed not taking?

Mad Max & the Wild OnesMad Max & the Wild Ones are a family rockabilly band made up of Mad Max (Dad) and his three sons; Wyatt (age 18), Cole (age 14), Duke (age 9) and mom Angela as Band Manager. They love rockabilly music, old cars, old motorcycles, old STUFF in general! The family does almost everything together. They travel all over the country and even over seas to play music. They are genuinely amazing artists and humble people that we are glad to know. These are good people.

(Click Here for a video from a Wild Ones show in New Zealand)

Everywhere they go they are always searching the thrift shops, junk yards and small towns for old 'treasures'.

On June 20, 2010 (Father's Day) they were driving back to Utah from Idaho where they had been performing at a music festival. They had decided to take the long way home and go through a little town called Kemmerer, WY where Max & Wyatt had bought an old 1950's motorcycle last year. They had really hit it off with the guy who sold it to them. They had spent hours talking about old cars, bikes, etc. They thought it would be a fun Father's Day activity to go "treasure hunting" and see if this fellow had any more old cars, etc. They arrived at the town around 5:00pm. They parked the motor home they were driving at the park in the center of town. Angela (Mom), Cole, Duke and Jessie (Wyatt's girlfriend) stayed at the park while Max and Wyatt began to walk around town trying to remember where the guy's house was.

They walked up one street and spotted a couple of old cars in a field. They walked up to the house on the property to inquire about the cars. They knocked on the door. They could hear sounds coming from inside the house but no one came to the door. So, they walked back around the block and as they were passing the property again from the back a man came from the direction of the house. They thought it might be the owner, looking for whoever was knocking. They walked toward him and called out, "Excuse me sir!" The man looked at them, turned around and ran away. Max and Wyatt were a little confused about this. They followed the man through the field to the front of the house, but he was gone. At that moment a police officer drove up, got out of his vehicle and began to shout at them. "What is your business in this town?!"

Republicans Disdainful of Unemployed Americans

The whole idea of unemployment insurance is that you pay into it while you're employed so that if you lose your job, there will be money available to help you out. Unemployment benefits also happen to make good economic sense, stimulating the economy by putting money in the hands of people who need it badly and will spend it right away.

We're now in a situation where Americans and their economy need help from the system they've contributed to with every paycheck, when they still had paychecks. The financial crisis has left us with nearly six job seekers for every available job in America right now. We have the highest rate of long-term unemployment in this country on record. The average job search now stretches a record 34.4 months - more than eight months.

One of the most surprising things about politics since the crash happened and since unemployment spiked is how many politicians apparently hate people for being unemployed, hate the unemployed. At least they're willing to voice for political reason. After you pay for unemployment insurance when you have a job, a bunch of politicians apparently think that you are a leech and a bad person for taking those benefits when you need them.

Yesterday the Senate Republicans filibustered away a $110 billion jobs bill that included funding designed to stimulate growth in employment and help for people who still can't find jobs. Now 1.2 million Americans stranded in this lousy job market are at risk of losing their unemployment benefits.

Conservative politicians apparently hate them just for being unemployed. After you pay for unemployment insurance when you have a job, a bunch of politicians apparently think that you are a leech and a bad person for taking those benefits when you need them.

Republican Sharron Angle, running for Senate in Nevada: "[W]e have put in so much entitlement into our government that we
really have spoiled our citizenry and said, you don't want the jobs that are available."

Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Arizona): "[C]ontinuing to pay people unemployment compensation is a disincentive for them to seek new work."

Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa): "We shouldn't turn the safety net into a hammock. It should actually be a safety net."

Rep. Dan Heller (R-Nevada): "Is the government now creating hobos?"

Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah): "You know, we should not be giving cash to people who basically are just going to blow it on drugs."

Obama, Tea Baggers, Socialism, Communism & Nazism

I have only heard two arguments against improving our Health Care System that hold any water; 1.) Absolute Libertarianism. They believe that government action or legislation of any kind is wrong. They support the abolition of the state in all forms. EVERYTHING is to be privatized, education, road building, the military, EVERYTHING. Zero government regulation in any sphere of life. 2.) "I got my Health Insurance, FUCK EVERYONE ELSE". Both of which are very naive ways of looking at the world, but at least they are honest and I can respect that.

The United States Health Care System is ranked 37th in the world, behind the likes of Costa Rica and Chili to name but two. We are ranked 24th in Healthy Life Expectancy and 44th in Infant Mortality. Yet we spend more on Health Care than ANY OTHER NATION IN THE WORLD. Our system is beyond fucked up. It should be absolutely dismantled and rebuilt from the ground up.

Right wing radicals flippantly tossing around words like Socialism, Nazism and Communism serve no purpose but to stir up fear for the sake of fear in the uneducated and the uninformed of our society. Socialism, Nazism and Communism are three distinct and different forms of government. Do a little research and see what the Nazis did with Socialists and Communists. Tea Baggers wondering in circles with homemade posters of a Hitler mustached Obama above "SOCIALIST" in big block letters are simply showing their ignorance and cannot be taken seriously. Furthermore the Soviet Union, which we were all raised to fear and loath, was an iron fisted dictatorship which had about as much in common with Karl Marx's Communism as the United States has in an Absolute Monarchy.

Of the three words that Tea Baggers love to label those against them, "Socialist" has the most relevance. However supporting Health Care for the citizens of the United States is no more "Socialist" than Medicare, The Social Security Administration, the Federal Interstate Roads System, your local Police Force or the billions of dollars spent on projects in every state in this Nation. This is why I always ask Tea Baggers if they support the dismantling of the Social Security System and Medicare. If they do not, their whole "Socialism" soap box is kicked out from under them. Again, they cannot be taken seriously.

I respect your right to believe and say whatever you choose. My only hope is that enough people like myself will take the time to address the rhetoric, misinformation and unsupported fears that have been fed to them by the likes of Fox News and all the folks financially raping us under the current system.

Yes they did...
